Downbeat once said that she "is a sensitive, articulate pianist, with depth and range... Her singing is delicate and breathy or worldly and sultry in accordance with the mood...," and I can't agree more!
On this CD, Roberts leads a crackling quartet through a collection of hidden gems that are not often performed by jazz artists. She concentrates the majority of her efforts to playing the piano while showcasing her lovely voice on three songs. In addition to her wonderful piano playing, the leader generously gives her bandmates ample space to stretch out.
This is one great, tight band. The material, arrangements and performances are all first rate. The sound of the recording is also impressive. Highly recommended!
