Anita O'Day (October 18, 1919 - November 23, 2006) was one of the truly talented, great jazz singers of our time. Admired for her sense of rhythm and dynamics, her early big band appearances shattered the traditional image of the "girl singer." O'Day's vocal style is often grouped with the West Coast Cool school of jazz. While maintaining a central core of hard swing, her considerable skills in improvisation of rhythm and melody put her squarely among the pioneers of bebop.
Her memorable works include the early hit "Let Me Off Uptown" with the Gene Krupa Orchestra and the live performance at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival captured in the documentary "Jazz on a Summer's Day," but her best recordings are arguably made with the Verve Records during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
