Description:A stunning debut of a major talent! Joris Roelofs was born in 1984 in France, and later moved to The Netherlands and studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music. His main instrument is the alto saxophone, but he also plays clarinet, tenor sax and flute. Roelofs has won prestigious scholarships and jazz competitions in Europe, and has performed with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and Laura Fygi.

Now, after making his pilgrimage to New York and impressing many jazz musicians there, comes this astonishing debut CD which was recorded in New York in 2007 with Aaron Goldberg, Matt Penman and Ari Hoenig. They are top-notch, young musicians on the cutting edge of the New York jazz scene. They all shine throughout the program, but Hoenig's drumming is especially amazing.

The a capella introduction of the opener "I Fall in Love Too Easily" immediately tells us that Roelofs is supremely talented. His beautiful tone and sound is decidedly on the Lee Konitz and Art Pepper side of the alto spectrum. His solos show a near-perfect mix of impeccable control of the instrument, sophisticated harmonic developments, imagination, lyricism and emotional expression.

The eclectic program includes three standards, members' originals and compositions by Warne Marsh, Dave Holland and Toninho Horta. I repeat. This is a stunning debut album of a major talent. Very highly recommended!

Produced by Wolfgang Muthspiel. Recorded September 7-9, 2007 in Brooklyn, NY.
