Recorded live in 1963 at New Latin Quarter, a premier night club in Tokyo!
New Latin Quarter opend its doors in the middle of Tokyo in 1959 as an ambitious international night club. With a big stage, 300 tables and over 200 employees, it entertained the rich, the powerful, and the famous until 1989. The acts who graced the stage were also top-notch, and included legendary jazz musicians and singers such as Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole and Helen Merrill. Now, the live recordings from these shows in 1963 and 1964 have been released for the first time!
In 1963, Louis Armstrong returned to Japan after his first trip in 1953. He brought with him His All Stars which included Joe Darensbourg on clarinet and Trummy Young on trombone, and singer Jewel Brown who appers on three songs.. Sixty-two years old at the time, Armstrong sounds strong both on his trumpet and vocals, and wowed the appreciative Japanese audience. The concert progresses at a relaxed pace, and notably, Armstrong does not monopolize the spotlight, giving each member of the band at least one tune each to showcase their extraordinary talent. A historic and priceless concert recording!
