Italian trumpeter sensation Fabrizio Bosso has a diverse musical curiosity, and has engaged himself in varied projects, including his funky neo hard-bop group High Five and a gorgeous, with-strings album Nuovo Cinema Paradiso. He surprised us again by forming a new group called Latin Mood with co-leader Javier Girotto, a formidable Argentinean-born saxophonist who lives and performs in Italy.
Together, and supported by other Italian musicians, Bosso and Girotto created an eclectic, ingenious and very satisfying program in this album. The tracks range from a samba-inspired "Ochenta" to a Cuban classic "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas" (featuring vocalist Raul Midon), from bossa nova ("Mamihlapinatapai") to tango ("Volver") to an Weather Report-inspired latin fusion ("Sol!"). On "El Cacerolazo," the two leaders show off their astonishing technique by playing complicated melodies and counterpoints at a break-neck speed.
Throughout, the level of creativity and musicianship is very high. Musically, this thoroughly enjoyable CD will take you to a journey through many different parts of the Latin world. This Japanese edition contains two bonus tracks not available in its Italian counterpart: "Blues" and "Caminando," both featuring Raul Midon on vocals. Recommended!
