Description:Winner of Jazz Japan Magazine 2012 Album Of The Year New Star Award!

Originally from Tokyo, Japan, New York-based jazz composer Miho Hazama began playing piano and electric organ at age 5 and started studying classical composition at age 13. After obtaining a bachelor's degree in Classical Composition in Japan, she moved to New York. With private instruction in jazz composition from Jim McNeely and piano from Phil Markowitz, she completed her master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music in Jazz Composition in 2012.

Since 2007, Ms. Hazama has worked with Yosuke Yamashita, Vince Mendoza, Ryuichi Sakamoto, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic, Siena Wind Orchestra, Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, Yamaha Symphonic Band and the Metropole Orkest. Her arrangements have been performed not only in the US but also in Japan, Poland, England, France and the Netherlands.

Her stunning debut CD Journey To Journey heralds the arrival of a major new talent in jazz composition since Maria Schneider. While she plays the piano on two tracks, she sticks to her role as composer and arranger for the rest of the album. As her vehicle, she chose a 13-piece band with an interesting composition: 3 woodwinds, 1 trumpet, 1 French horn, 2 violins, a viola, a cello, a vibraphone, plus the piano-bass-drums rhythm section. It sounds like a big band at times, but it's not. Also, her use of the string section is unusual in that it is an integral part of the band, not added here and there for additional color. (It helps that the string section includes the versatile violin superstars Mark Feldman and Joyce Hammann.) Vibraphonist Stefon Harris and alto saxophonist Steve Wilson appear as guests, each contributing great solos on Track 2 and 4, respectively.

Hazama's compositional style is modern and groove-oriented. She utilizes many tools available to a modern composer and her tunes can be fairly complex and angular at times, but they remain accessible partly due to the great groove and forward-moving momentum. This is a wonderful debut album, and I look forward to her future works. Recommended!

Recorded on July 2 and 3, 2012 at Systems Two, Brooklyn, New York.
