Artist/Band: | | Mike Garson Trio | Name: | | Wild Out West [2CD] | Cat No.: | | BP-7002 | Performed by: | | Mike Garson (piano) Darek Oles (bass) Joe La Barbera (drums)
| Description: | | Virtuoso pianist Mike Garson traverses many genres of music, but this special 2 CD set captures him in a "pure jazz mode" with a superb rhythm section--Darek Oles on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums. Recorded in 2006 under a unique circumstance, the trio found themselves in a formerly abandoned opera house in Virginia City, Nevada, with just about 20 people in the audience. Regardless of the size of the crowd, the trio was inspired, and luckily for us, Jim Merod of BluePort Jazz was there to capture both the rehearsal session and the actual concert.
This unique set is a fantastic showcase of Garson's talents as jazz pianist: his beautiful tone, astonishing technique and boundless imagination are in full display. Without time limitations, he lets each song unfold unhurriedly and explores many possibilities. In addition to jazz standards--many of which are inspired by Bill Evans, the trio performs Garson's original compositions which tend to be lyrical and quite beautiful, as in the tender "Lullaby For Our Daughters."
The playback level of the CD may be lower than many of today's standard CDs, but that is intentional and a correct way to preserve the dynamics. Turn up the volume of your stereo and enjoy the magnificent performance! Strongly recommended.
Recorded live at the Comstock at Piper's Opera House, Virginia City, Nevada, in November 2006. Produced by John Hayes. Recorded by Jim Merod. Mastered by Steve McCormack. |
