The quartet -- with violin, viola, cello and bass -- performs Viret's original compositions (except for Track 2 by Francois Couperin) with gusto, and apparently, everyone is a very capable improviser. The overall sensibility here is more classical than jazz, but open-minded listeners will appreciate the excitement of hearing something new and unexpected.
