European-pressing, 180-gram vinyl reissue of a classic jazz album! Direct Metal Mastering on original George Neumann Cutting System!

At a time when sustaining a big band was beginning to be difficult, Duke Ellington participated in the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival, which took jazz from a closed night club environment to an outdoor stage in broad daylight and gave a "new life" to the legendary band. From that time on Ellington became a regular attraction at the Newport and other jazz festivals. This album was a studio recording that primarily featured tunes he had presented at the Newport and Playboy jazz festivals during 1959.

This is a great album by a big band at its creative peak. One of the highlights is the "drum battle" between the two drummers, Sam Woodyard and Jimmy Johnson on "Duel Fuel." In this vinyl edition, two bonus tunes ("V.I.P.'s Boogie" and "Jam With Sam") have been added to the original album that complete the session.

Five Stars - Down Beat
"What a wonderfully powerful yet subtle instrument is the Ellington band. In this release, it kicks its way through part of the 1959 summer's festival material. The moods range from thundering jubilation through pixyish humor and satire to quiet reflection. By all means, listen to this."
- Don De Michael
