| Release Date: | | 05/07/2003 | Description: | | Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin Big Band was formed in Los Angeles in 1973. The rehearsal band of studio musicians had a clear concept: it would feature Akiyoshi as its sole composer/arranger and Tabackin as main soloist on tenor and flute. The band continued to record and tour until disbanded in 1982 when the two principals moved to New York. (They formed a new band called "Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra Featuring Lew Tabackin" which was active until 2003.)
With a flexible reed section each member of which was capable of switching instruments, the band had a distinctively colorful sound. With Akiyoshi's innovative compositions, Tabackin's superb solos and the band's tight execution, it was considered as one of the best big bands in the United States.
Tales of a Courtesan was the third album of this excellent band, and includes two hot swingers the band would perform often on tour -- "Road Time Shuffle" and "Strive For Jive." The title tune is an imaginative and melancholy story of a Japanese oiran courtesan.
Produced by Hiroshi Isaka. Recorded in December 1975 in Los Angeles. This reissue CD was remasterd with K2 24-bit technology and released in 2003. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
