Chris Minh Doky was born in Denmark between a Vietnamese father and a Danish mother. A versatile and talented bassist who is equally comfortable in jazz, funk, rock and classical, he has been performing and recording actively both in Denmark and in the U.S. Since the early 1990s, he has performed with Mike Stern, Michel Camilo, John Scofield and Ryuichi Sakamoto. He was the bassist in the last band of the late Michael Brecker. (Pianist Niels Lan Doky is his brother.)
For his latest leader album Scenes From A Dream, Doky partnered with Vince Mendoza, a great American composer/arranger and multiple GRAMMY winner who has been leading the Metropole Orkest since 1995. The versatile orchestra based in Netherlands has, under Mendoza's direction, performed and recorded with prominent jazz musicians such as Pat Metheny and John Scofield.
In this dreamy, poetic and melancholic album, Doky's trio with Larry Goldings on piano and Peter Erskine on drums is augmented by the gorgeous string sound of the Metropole Orkest, which adds pastel-like colors and shifting textures. Doky's sensitive and expressive bass often takes the role of the primary solo instrument, and a few tracks are performed by just the trio.
The lyrical and gentle songs are very personal to Doky: "The Cost of Living" is his tribute to Michael Brecker, a song he often performed with the late saxophonist. "Arthos II" is the name of the ship that took his Vietnamese father to France, and the composition reflects Doky's imagination of that voyage. "Fred Hviler Over Land og By" and "I Skovens Dybe Stille Ro" are Danish folk songs while "All Is Piece" is a Vietnamise folk song. "Dear Mom," another original composition of Doky's, is his loving tribute to his mother who suffers from Alzheimer's and can only be reached by singing.
