But I, for one, always thought of her as a superb jazz pianist who also sings, and this latest release from Somethin' Else (an imprint of EMI Music Japan) is a strong proof.
Recorded live in Amsterdam for a radio broadcast, this 2002 performance is a perfect showcase for Elias's pianistic talents. It is simply amazing to witness her prodigious chops, and hear her free-spirited, daring and bold reimagination of well-known standards. The stellar partners -- Marc Johnson (Elias's husband) on bass and Joey Baron on drums -- provide not only impeccable support but also challenge and inspire her by their fantastic playing.
Many of the tunes extending for more than ten minutes, each performance takes different turns and is full of surprises. After an impressive intro by Elias, "Just Friends" bounces with a sophisticated funk beat. "Desafinado," which lasts more than 18 minutes, develops into many different directions, and is a highlight of this exciting album. Recommended!
