Artist/Band: | | Elvin Jones | Name: | | Live At The Lighthouse Vol. 1 | Cat No.: | | TOCJ-50536 | Performed by: | | Elvin Jones (drums) Dave Liebman (flute,soprano sax,tenor sax) Steve Grossman (soprano sax,tenor sax) Gene Perla (bass)
| Release Date: | | 01/23/2013 | Description: | | Celebrating his 45th birthday (September 9, 1972), Elvin Jones recorded his live concert at the Lighthouse Cafe, a legendary West Coast institution. Accompanying him in a wide-open, piano-less quartet setting were two young and talented saxophone players, Dave Liebman and Steve Grossman, who used John Coltrane's style as a starting point to create their own musical identities. Bassist Gene Perla held the unit together with his sensitive playing.
Originally released as a double-LP, this concert is now reissued on 2 separate CDs (Vol. 1 and Vol 2), including bonus tracks not included in the original album. The two saxophone players (both doubling on tenor and soprano, with Liebman occasionally playing the flute as well) sound powerful, inspired and stimulating, and the leader's drumming is explosive. Fiery, exciting and adventurous, the group stretches out for more than 20 minutes on two tracks. This complete, limited edition will be an important addition to your collection if you are a fan of Jones, Liebman and/or Grossman.
This is Vol. 1. Vol. 2 is available here.
Recorded September 9, 1972 at the Lighthouse, Hermosa Beach, California. This CD reissue released by EMI Music Japan. 24-bit digital remastering. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
