| | Release Date: | | 06/25/2008 | | Description: | | Bass master Ron Carter has a special relationship with the Japanese Somethin' Else label (Toshiba EMI), and he has released several leader albums that have not been made available in the US. Following the wonderful It's The Time with Mulgrew Miller and Russell Malone, Carter's latest is his celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the bossa nova.
Carter encountered the bossa nova in the 1960s -- he was the bassist on Antonio Carlos Jobim's historic album Wave -- and since then he has mastered its rhythm and vocabulary to the point where Brazilian musicians regard him as one of the best "bossa" bassists.
For this special bossa album, Carter brought the core of his regular group (pianist Stephen Scott and percussionist Rolando Morales-Matos) with two Brazilian musicians (guitarist Guilherme Monteiro and drummer Portinho) and saxophonist Javon Jackson. The result is a unique blend of serious jazz chops and authentic bossa rhythms. It is also notable that four of the nine tunes here are composed by Carter himself.
This album is also constructed around an interesting concept. In carter's own words; "The CD concept was (is) to go from a group (and large sound) to smaller and smaller groups..., ending with a single player..., like a novel (complex plot) that reaches a conclusion (resolution) of a single ending (one player)."
