Pianist Sir Roland Hanna displays his virtuosity in this bebop-oriented recording made for the Japanese Trio label (which later becomes part of Kenwood). Targeting audiophiles as well as astute jazz fans, the original session was recorded live in studio as a very special, direct-to-disc cutting project.
Apparently this reissue CD is sourced from a tape that was running in parallel to the analog direct cutting chain, but it benefits sonically from the superb recording equipment and the lack of use of limiters and equalizers.
Hanna is paired here with his long-time partner George Mraz on bass, and Motohiko Hino, a fierce Japanese drummer who was not afraid of pushing the envelope and challenging his bandmates. Exciting!
