Artist/Band: | | Tubby Hayes Quartet | Name: | | Tubby's Groove [CD] | Cat No.: | | AS-110 | Performed by: | | Tubby Hayes (tenor sax,vibraphone) Terry Shannon (piano) Jeff Clyne (bass) Phil Seamen (drums)
| Release Date: | | 05/27/2011 | Description: | | The CD version of a super-rare reissue vinyl LP that's already out of print!
Japanese independent jazz label Atelier Sawano has been reissuing very rare vinyl LPs originally released by Tempo Records, often referred to as the Blue Note of Great Britain. The sixth such reissue title is Tubby's Groove by the label's star saxophonist and vibraphonist Tubby Hayes. This album is so rare, that an original LP commands several thousand dollars in the used market.
Tubby Hayes (1935-1973) was born into a musical family in London. His father was a BBC studio violinist who gave his son violin lessons from an early age. By the age of ten Hayes was playing the piano, and started on the tenor sax at eleven. Hayes left school and started playing professionally at the age of fifteen. Known as one of the premier saxophonists in England, Hayes' influences include Sonny Rollins, Johnny Griffin and Hank Mobley. On this album, he also plays vibraphone, which he learned from Victor Feldoman, on "Embers."
The mood of this one-horn session is relaxed intensity. Backed by the competent piano trio led by Terry Shannon, Hayes blows his horn with ample creativity and imagination. Thanks to the tender loving care of the people involved in this reissue project, the sound quality of this vinyl record is superb: Open, vivid, dynamic and detailed. This CD version was released after the highly sought-after vinyl LP was sold out. Recommended for collectors and fans of Tubby Hayes!
Originally produced by Tony Hall for the Tempo label. Recorded in England in December, 1959. This reissue CD (mono) was released in Japan by Atelier Sawano in May 2011.
Note on track order:
On Side B of the original LP, "Blue Hayes" was cut as Track 2 and "Sunday Monday" as Track 3. However, the order of these two tracks are reversed on this reissue vinyl due to a cutting error. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
