| Release Date: | | 10/15/2008 | Description: | | This is a CD reissue of a 12-inch LP originally released by a minor label called Period Records in 1958. The LP had completely differnt recordings by two different groups on its two sides: Three tunes by the Sonny Rollins Quintet on Side A and three tunes by the Thad Jones Ensemble on Side B.
Sonny Rollins' sides were recorded on November 4, 1957, just one day after he recorded the legendary "Live at Village Vanguard" album for Blue Note. With trombonist Jimmy Cleveland and pianist Gil Coggins in the band, Rollins showed his relaxed side in this session.
Now, these three tunes were not enough for a 12-inch LP, so the producers at Period Records decided to put three recordings by the Thad Jones Ensemble on Side B. They were recorded for but did not make it on Thad Jones's album called Mad Thad. Recorded in 1956 and 1957, these tunes feature Jones and his then-bandmates at the Count Basie Orchestra, and, considering the quality of the performance, these are hardly left-overs!
These are very important recordings with historical significance. Recommended for fans of Sonny Rollins and collectors!
Originally produced by Leonard Feather for Period Records. Sonny Rollins session recorded on November 4, 1957 in New York City. Thad Jones's sessions recorded on December 24, 1956 and January 6, 1957 in New York City. This reissue CD released by M&I in Japan in October 2008. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
