Japanese independent jazz label Marshmallow Records has released some important historic recordings in its Historical Series. Jazz At Cafe Bohemia Vol. 1 is the latest in the series that features three groups: The Max Roach Quintet with Sonny Rollins, the George Wallington Trio, and the Cannonball Adderley Quintet. Sourced from the radio broadast for a program called Bandstand USA, these live performances took place in the famed New York jazz club in 1956 and 1957.

Tracks 1-4 feature the Max Roach Quintet with Kenny Dorham, Sonny Rollins, Ray Bryant and George Morrow, six months after the accidental deaths of Clifford Brown and Richie Powell. The highlight is the hot opening track, played for over 15 minutes at a break-neck tempo. Everyone stretches out with long solos.

Tracks 5-7 are by the George Wallington Trio with Teddy Kotick and Nick Stabulas. A prototypical bebop pianist, Wallington leads his regular trio at the time nicely, playing "Strange Music" based on Grieg's composition, a lovely ballad "In A Sentimental Mood" and an interesting original composition "Escalating."

Tracks 8-12 feature a particularly strong edition of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet with Nat Adderley, Junior Mance, Sam Jones and Jimmy Cobb. The up-tempo numbers such as "I'll Remember April" and Mance's "Jubilation" are pure joy.

Because of the source material, the sound quality of these mono recordings is good to fair, although not too bad considering its historical nature. Also, due to the time constraints of the radio program, some tracks contain only partial performances. Despite these limitations, these recordings provide us modern-day jazz fans a unique opportunity to peek into a window of jazz history and experience what it was like to be in a great jazz club in New York in 1956 and 1957. Recommended to serious jazz fans and collectors!

All tracks recorded at Cafe Bohemia, New York City. Tracks 1-4: December 10, 1956. Tracks 5-7: November 24, 1956. Tracks 8-12: August 3, 1957. Mono.
