Description: | | Peter Appleyard, who sadly passed away on July 17, 2013 at age 84, was a widelly respected Canadian jazz vibraphonist. Born in 1928 in England, he moved to Toronto, Canada and became a professional musician in the early 1950s. He played with Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and the Count Basie Orchestra, among others.
Sophisticated Ladies is his latest album released in 2012. It features 10 Canadian female singers on 10 songs, backed by Appleyard and a great band that includes Reg Schwager on guitar and Neil Swainson on bass. Reflecting the wide and deep talent pool of Canada, every one of the 10 singers is very good, although we in the U.S. are more familiar with some of them than others, including Emilie-Claire Barlow, Sophie Milman, Carol Welsman and Diana Panton.
The songs are exquisitely and tastefully arranged, and expertly performed. The wonderful sound quality adds to the value of this supremely enjoyable CD. Highly recommended for all jazz fans!
Recorded at CBC Studio 211, Toronto, Canada. This CD is a Japanese edition released by Muzak, Inc. |
