Artist/Band:Don Thompson and Pat La Barbera
Name:A Little Simple Magic
Cat No.:FSY-515
Performed by:Don Thompson (piano)
Pat La Barbera (tenor sax)
Release Date:07/10/2013
Description:Canadian multi-instrument player Don Thompson is a member of a rare breed of musicians who have truly mastered both the piano and the bass, as well as vibraphones. Here, for a very special project for the Japanese independent label Five Stars Records, he is playing the piano exclusively in a duo setting with saxophonist and Canadian resident Pat La Barbera with whom he's collaborated for over 40 years.

In this program of mostly well-known standards, their musical sympathy is apparent from the opening track. Thompson's piano is elegant and full of subtle beauty. La Barbera's tenor is strong and delicate at the same time. The sound quality of this intimate duo and solo piano performances--Thompson plays solo on two tracks--is also superb. Recommended!

Recorded at Landmark Studio, Yokohama, Japan, on December 21, 2012.
