Artist/Band: | | Alexis Cole | Name: | | Close Your Eyes [Single Layer SACD] | Cat No.: | | VHGD-24 | Performed by: | | Alexis Cole (vocal) John di Martino (piano) James Cammack (bass) Daduka Da Fonseca (drums)
| Release Date: | | 05/21/2014 | Description: | | Single Layer SACD = Ultimate Audiophile Edition!
In 2014, the Japanese independent jazz label Venus Records began releasing its "best of the best" albums from its deep catalog on single layer SACD, the ultimate audiophile format. (Please note that single layer SACDs require an SACD player for playback. They will not play on a regular CD player.)
Alexis Cole, born into a musical family in Queens, New York, began her professional career after obtaining a master's degree from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. She has performed with Slide Hampton, Rufus Reid and Harry Pickens among others, and so far released five CDs on independent labels.
Following her two previous albums from the Japanese Venus Records Someday My Prince Will Come and Someday My Prince Will Come comes her eagerly awaited third album, Close Your Eyes. As its subtitle "The Sultry Sound of Jazz" suggests, it focuses on the sultry nature of Cole's vocals with selection of songs about love, romance and seduction.
The familar standards are tastefully and intelligently arranged, and Cole's attractive, smooth alto voice is very effective in many of the slow numbers. She has impeccable technique and control, and a confident jazz style that hints an influence from Carmen McRae and Sarah Vaughan. The stellar piano trio--John Di Martino, James Cammack and Duduka Da Fonseca--is featured generously and each member is given ample space to stretch out and contribute musically. This is a greatl vocal album that will also satisfy fans of good instrumental jazz!
The vinyl LP version is available here.
