Artist/Band: | | Rickey Woodard | Name: | | Pineapple Delight | Cat No.: | | RW-001 | Performed by: | | Rickey Woodard (alto sax, tenor sax) Bobby Rodriguez (trumpet) Llew Matthews (piano) Edwin Livingston (bass) Ralph Penland (drums) Roy McCurdy (drums)
| Description: | | Rickey Woodard has been a first-call saxophonist in Southern California for many years now. If you are hip to the Los Angeles jazz scene, you would see him every so often in various big bands as well as in small group settings. Born in 1950 into a musical family in Nashville, Rickey came to California to join the great Ray Charles band. After his eight wonderful years with Ray Charles, he has pursued a solo career and released nine CDs to date, including this latest release.
Pineapple Delight, named after Rickey's favorite fruit, is a sunny, delightful, swinging straight ahead jazz album, the kind that makes your feet tap and puts a smile on your face.
True, there's not much risk-taking or innovation here. The album won't tease your brains with dazzling arrangements either. But the tunes--all original composisions by the leader--have attractive, hummable melodies and are impeccably and tastefully played by Rickey and his veteran collaborators incluing Dr. Boggy Rodriguez on trumpet, Llew Matthews on piano and Roy McCurdy and Ralph Penland on drums. They exhibit the relaxed concentration and in-the-pocket swing that only true masters of the art of jazz can realize. Recommended!
