Peter Rosendal (b. 1976) is a promising pianist and composer from Denmark. He was classically trained before obtaining a master's degree from the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. While he has internalized the traditional jazz idiom, his musical interests are varied, encompassing classical to electronica. He once made a solo album playing not only the piano, but also whistling and using wood, rubber bands, seashells, paper and water and buiscuit cans.
The Japanese producer of the Cloud label, Yoko Yoneyama, fell in love with his unique style and approached him for a new recording. They chose a traditional piano trio setting for this album, with the veteran bassist Mads Vinding and one of the best European drummers of his generation, Morten Lund. Crescent unfolds like a tapestry of many landscapes, with the gorgeous sounds of the piano and intricate interplay between the three masters.
The program consists primarily of Rosendal's unique and mysterious original compositions, augmented by an English traditional ("The Water Is Wide"), a song by Danish composer Carl Nielsen ("Tunge morke natteskyer") and one standard ("Like Someone In Love"). On a few tunes, Rosendal plays flugabone (a cross between flugelhorn and trombone) and Fender Rhodes using overdubs to good effect. The sound, engineered by Bjarne Hansen, is also exquisite.
Recorded at STC Studio, April 25 and 26, 2011. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
