| Description: | | Japanese pianist Hiroe Sekine has been playing and arranging music in the United States for two decades. She also happens to be a personal friend of mine with whom I play tennis almost weekly. Hiroe is a gifted jazz pianist, composer, arranger and singer based in Southern California. A native of Japan, she studied with Russell Ferrante and Alan Pasqua, among others, at the prestigious Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, and graduated with honors.
Her first album, A-me (rain), was produced by Russell Ferrante and features such first-rate, Los Angeles-based musicians as Bob Sheppard, Tony Dumas and Peter Erskine. It is an ambitious debut album featuring Hiroe's many talents. She is not only a brilliant pianist but also a wonderfully original arranger, showing her effective writing skills for the three-horn sextet/septet format with no less than seven tunes in this album. In addition to the brilliantly arranged standards, among the finest tracks in this album are her three compositions, the jaunty "Little Monster," the little-big-band tour de force "Sand-Smog," and the gorgeously evocative title tune. Furthermore, we find Hiroe's pianistic showcase in the magnificent solo piano redition of Cole Porter's "Every Time We Say Goodbye.", perhaps the most beautiful tune in this exciting album.
I'm proud to be a friend of such a talented musician, and to present her wonderful CD to the world at Eastwind Import. Very highly recommended to all jazz fans!
Recorded at the Entourage Recording Studios, Hollywood in August 2009. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
