Artist/Band: | | Max Ionata Quartet Featuring Fabrizio Bosso | Name: | | Inspiration | Cat No.: | | ALBCD-004 | Performed by: | | Max Ionata (tenor sax) Luca Mannutza (piano) Nicola Muresu (bass) Nicola Angelucci (drums) Fabrizio Bosso (trumpet) Gege Telesforo (vocal) Bruno Marcozzi (percussion)
| Release Date: | | 07/08/2009 | Description: | | Born in 1972, Max Ionata is considered as one of the finest, cutting-edge tenor saxophonists in Europe. A late bloomer, he did not become a full-time professional musician until 2000, but since then, his reputation has been quickly rising. His recent live album Tenor Legacy (2008, Picanto Records) with another Italian star Daniele Scannapieco has been praised by the most attentive critics and enthusiasts in the world.
Now, Ionata has released another album, Inspiration, from a Japanese independent label Alb????re Jazz that specializes in European, and particularly Italian, jazz. Here, Ionata stands with his most trusted and talented Italian musicians: Luca Mannutza on piano, the brilliant trumpet star Fabrizio Bosso and his regular rhythm section. Ionata has a very attractive, burly sound with rich overtones, and his impressive solos reflect his vigorous musicianship and affluent creativity.
While the general tone of compositions and performance can be characterized as neo-hard bop, the varied program includes a fun-filled, samba-tinged rendition of "Shiny Stockings," funky and soulful "Funkone," and an old-fashioned be-bop tune "Hey, Rookie!" with the guest scat vocalist Gegé Telesforo. This great album is another testament to the vitality of the current Italian jazz scene and the country's deep talent pool. The quality of the recorded sound is also outstanding. Highly recommended!
Recorded in Italy, March 3-5, 2009. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
