Artist/Band: | | Masaki Kanamaru | Name: | | Let's Fly Away | Cat No.: | | XQAM-1704 | Performed by: | | Masaki Kanamaru (vocal) Christian Jacob (arranger, piano) Masaaki Ikeda (trombone) Shuichiro Ise (flugelhorn, trumpet) Mitsukuni Tanabe (guitar) Tadaaki Konishi (bass) Akira Igawa (drums) Diane Hubka (vocal)
| Release Date: | | 12/17/2008 | Description: | | It is not easy to "make it" as a jazz singer, period, but the difficulty multiplies if you are a Japanese man, due to the language barrier and the overwhelming market preference for young, photogenic female singers. Masaki Kanamaru is one of the few such contenders who have truly made it. He has true chops, the sense of swing, and his English pronunciation is very good.
His third album Let's Fly Away has a lot going for it. First of all, it's a Cole Porter songbook. Secondly, in addition to his attractive singing, Kanaramu enlisted the supremely talented Christian Jacob as arranger and pianist for the session. On top of that, he has Diane Hubka, the lovely singer from Los Angeles, as a guest singer on two songs!
Jacob displays his uncanny talent for "reimagining" and putting a modern spin on the American Songbook, he has shown in his association with Tierney Sutton over the years. Leading a small group of top-notch Japanese musicians, Jacob shines on his piano playing as well.
This is a very nice, swinging jazz vocal album, full of wonderful, sophisticated arrangements and great performances all around. Recommended to jazz vocal fans without reservation!
Produced by Yasuo Sangu and Toshio Kobari. Recorded on May 19, 2008 in Tokyo. All arrangements by Christian Jacob. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
