| | Description: | | Ken Peplowski is a great clarinet player -- in my humble opinion the best in the world right now -- and an excellent tenor saxophonist. He has entertained countless people around the world with his art as well his tremendous sense of humor. It is great to see (and hear) his leader album released in the US, aside from his Japan-only Venus releases.
This time, Ken is surrounded by masters of their respective instruments: Shelly Berg on piano, Jay Leonhart on bass and Joe La Barbara on drums. The leader plays clarinet on half of the program and the bigger instrument on the other half. The program contains three Ellington/Strayhorn compositions including the title track, several standards, and one original each by Ken, Berg, and La Barbera.
The mood ranges from jubilant swing to cohntemplative blues, and the collective musicianship is excellent throughout. An example of the best of today's straight-ahead jazz! Recommended!
