Description:Born in Chicago in 1931, Clifford Jordan was a titan of tenor sax who represented the essense of hard bop until he passed away in 1993. This album, considered by many as his towering achievement and an important milestone of modern jazz, is made available as CD for the first time!

The self-produced album was recorded in 1969 and originally released in 1972 by Strata East, but the LP quickly disappeared from the market and became known as a "phantom record" by collectors. A Japanese label called P-Vine finally contacted Jordan's widow Sandra, and to their surprise, found out that she still had the master tapes! The tapes were first digitally remastered in New York, and then another remastering took place in Japan to reduce noise and improve sound quality. This lovingly prepared CD even has a booklet that contains rare photos of the recording sessions.

You'd be surprised to see the credits which include Don Cherry, Kenny Dorham, Wynton Kelly, Richard Davis, Wilbur Ware, Roy Haynes and Ed Blackwell! It's hard to imagine Cherry and Kelly playing together, but apparently in 1969 musicians were exploring and did not pidgeonhole themselves into different "sub-categories" of jazz. Davis and Ware are coupled in a "double bass" configuration on a couple of tunes, and Haynes and Blackwell play two drum sets on two tracks.

The highlight is undoubtedly the 17-minutes long first track, "Vienna." A jazz waltz with an air of mystery an melancholy, the piece steadily builds up the momentum, and Jordan and co. take the listener to many emotional heights. The album may not have the clean, sophisticated sound of a major label production, but it more than makes up for it with the powers of raw emotion and inspired performance.

Over the years I've seen many valuable reissue CDs coming out of Japan, but I think this one is very special--a significant contribution to jazz fans of the world from my home country. Don't let this chance to own a piece of jazz history pass you by!
