Artist/Band: | | Roberto Gatto Quintet | Name: | | Remembering Shelly | Cat No.: | | ALBCD-007 | Performed by: | | Roberto Gatto (drums) Marco Tamburini (trumpet) Max Ionata (tenor sax) Luca Mannutza (piano) Giuseppe Bassi (bass)
| Release Date: | | 01/13/2010 | Description: | | Italian drummer Roberto Gatto has had a long and illlustrious career, performing and recording since age 19 with such stars as Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Johnny Griffin, Mal Waldron, Dexter Gordon, Dizzy Gillespie and Enrico Pieranunzi.
For this special project, Gatto decided to honor his idol and inspiration, Shelly Manne, and more specifically, a series of live recordings Manne made with His Men at Black Hawk jazz club. He transcribed the arrangements from the recordings, and even resurrected some unrecorded materials from YouTube video footages. Then, Gatto gathered the most talented Italian musicians of a younger generation, went to a jazz club and recorded these materials live in concert.
Gatto's Men include the saxophone star Max Ionata (one of my favorites right now), great trumpeter Marco Tamburini and superb pianist Luca Mannutza. In this well-recorded live date, everybody shines. The arrangements, which had never been performed by any other group, reminds us of the golden days of modern jazz. And of course, these hugely talented Italian musicians bring their own flair and breathe new life and additional heat to the proceedings.
This is the most sincere musical tribute to Shelly Manne by a drummer that I've heard, and certainly most successful and satisfying. It brings me pleasure to think that Manne's influences and spirit live on in Gatto and many other drummers in the world. Recommended for fans of straight-ahead jazz!
Recorded live on April 28 - May 2, 2009 at Alexanderplatz Jazz Club in Roma, Italy. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
