Description:Three Blind Mice Blu-spec CD reissue series! Limited paper sleeve edition!

Straight To The Core is different from the rest of the TBM reissue series in that it was recorded in 1989, later than most in the series which were recorded in the early 1970s. Alto and soprano saxophonist Sachi Hayasaka was one of the first Japanese female jazz horn players who made it big. This adventurous album was her second as a leader and first for the Three Blind Mice label.

For this album, Hayasaka led a relatively large group with a tenor sax, trombone and guitar in addition to the rhythm section of piano, bass, drums plus percussion. Also, American trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith appeared as a guest on three particularly impressive tracks.

Hayasaka shows a strong inclination to free jazz by choosing three compositions by Ornette Coleman ("Mother Of The Veil," "In All Languages" and "Lonely Woman")and one by Rahsaan Roland Kirk ("Lady's Blues"), as well as playing a completely improvised "Encounter" with Smith and bassist Toshiki Nagata. She also shows some extended techniques such as playing both alto and soprano sax at the same time (a la Roalnd Kirk) and circular breathing. This album also shows her eclectic tastes in the variety of rhythms and moods, such as the use of ska (on "SKA" composed by trombonist Yoichi Murata) and rock rhythms on "Lonely Woman." All in all, this is an exciting, inspired, gutsy album by a strong-willed musician.

Recorded in Tokyo and New York on November 5, 6 and 25, 1989. Blu-spec CD is compatible with all regular CD players. Paper sleeve special limited edition.
