Pinky Winters is a Los Angeles-based singer who is admired by local fans and jazz musicians. Due to her limited exposure and scarce recordings, she may not be well-known outside of LA, but there are some ardent fans of hers in Japan, including Yasuo Sangu, the producer of SSJ Records.
The present album, Speak Low, represents half of a previously unreleased 1983 live concert in Washington, DC, with Winters accompanied by the great West Coast pianist Lou Levy and bassist Bill Takas. The first part of the concert was made available as The Shadow Of Your Smile from SSJ Records which is, regrettably, out of print.
Winters' voice and singing reflects her long years of life experience, wisdom, and warmth. Her understanding and expression of lyrics, and her subtle phrasing are so good that the listener is drawn deeply into each song without knowing what's happening. If you haven't somehow heard of this fine singer by now, pick up this CD and start listening!
