Discomate West Coast Jazz Series
Discomate was a Japanese label that took a special interest in recording West Coast jazz musicians in the late 1970s through early 1980s. Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabackin, who were running the renowned big band at the time, helped the label by acting as producer and performer, often showcasing the talents of their under-recorded band members.
Shining Hour is one of such albums, and the first and only leader album of alto saxophonist Dick Spencer, a very important member in the Akiyoshi-Tabackin big band. Produced by Tabackin and now reissued for the first time on CD by SSJ, this wonderful straight-ahead album reaffirms the great skills and talent of Spencer as a bebop soloist.
Spencer's style directly descends from Charlie Parker, and has some similarities with Phil Woods and Bud Shank. His performance here is confident, smart and emotional. The first-rate sidemen -- Conte Candoli, Cedar Walton, Reggie Johnson and Billy Higgins -- helped make this album memorable. Very solid, swinging and entertaining! Highly recommended!
Produced by Lew Tabackin. Recorded on May 17 and 18, 1978 at Sage and Sound Studios, Hollywood. Originally released by Discomate. This DSD-mastered, paper sleeve edition CD released by SSJ Records in Japan on June 18, 2008. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
