Artist/Band: | | Toshiko Akiyoshi | Name: | | Solo Live 2004 | Cat No.: | | YZSO-10001 | Performed by: | | Toshiko Akiyoshi (piano)
| Description: | | Legendary pianist, composer, arranger and band leader Toshiko Akiyoshi disbanded her big band after 30 years in 2003, and since then she has focused her activities as a pianist, performing in various formats: solo, duo (with her husband Lew Tabackin) and small combos.
This newly surfaced live recording captured her in 2004, shortly after she had made that transition. In this recital, Akiyoshi shows that she is at the top of her game as a pianist. She has tremendous technique, strong touch, boundless and youthful imagination. More than 60 years ago, she started out as a bop pianist and an ardent follower of Bud Powell, but she has created her own world of pianism.
The program consists of her original compositions and jazz standards. Standout numbers include her signature composition "Long Yellow Road," swinging "After You've Gone," and simple yet beautiful "Central Park West" and "Hope." In her long career, Akiyoshi has only released three other solo piano albums. To many, this is no doubt the best among them. An important document of one of the greatest jazz musicians of our time. Recommended!
Recorded live in concert on April 24, 2004 at "Studio F" in Gifu, Japan. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
