Artist/Band: | | Giovanni Mirabassi | Name: | | Out Of Track | Cat No.: | | VACM-1365 | Performed by: | | Giovanni Mirabassi (piano) Gianluca Renzi (bass) Leon Parker (drums)
| Release Date: | | 12/03/2008 | Description: | | Giovanni Mirabassi, born Perugia, Italy, in 1970 and living now in Paris, is one of the brilliant, rising stars of piano jazz. We have tracked his growth through a number of CDs released by Atelier Sawano, but this latest release from Videoarts Music is undoubtedly his strongest ever.
Mirabassi, who is largely self-taught but had instructions from a classical pianist, has a typically European sensibilities, with a slightly cool temperament, less obvious emphasis on blues and swing, brilliant technique, and undeniable singing, lyrical qualities.
Supported superbly by Italian bassist Gianluca Renzi and American drummer Leon Parker, Mirabassi knocks us out with a beautiful and eclectic program. In addition to traditionals and jazz standards such as "Dear Old Stockholm," "Alone Together" and "Just One Of Those Things," there are attractive original compositions including "Pieranunzi," which is dedicated to a great Italian jazz pianist, and some intriguing film music such as "Vuelvo al Sur" composed by Astor Piazzolla, "Here's to You" by Ennio Morricone and "Convite para a Vida" written for the Brazillian film City of God.
There are many highlights -- indeed, there are no tracks that are less than stellar -- but John Coltrane's "Impressions" stands out as a rare piano trio performance of this modal tune.
Also, I am compelled to mention the great sound quality of this CD. The recording is stunningly detailed, open and transparent. You can hear every single nuance of the performance by the three great musicians, and consequently the CD draws you into the music. This is absolutely one of the best piano trio CDs I've heard in 2008! Very highly recommended!
Produced by Jér????me Peyrot and Giovanni Mirabassi. Recorded in Paris, France, on May 18 and 19, 2008. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
