A consummate West Coast jazz pianist, Pete Jolly recorded three albums in the 1960s for Ava records. Sweet September is the second one following Little Bird, featuring young Chuck Berghoffer on bass and multi-talented Larry Bunker on drums. Guitarist Howard Roberts is added and Nick Martinez replaces Bunker on two trucks.
Jolly's joyous, driving piano style is very pleasant and effective on fast numbers including the opening title track. His wonderful technique and sophisticated taste is well complemented by the great rhythm section. The recorded sound (engineered by Dayton "Bones" Howe) is gutsy and pretty good as well.
