Description:Lullaby Of Birdland is a tribute to George Shearing, a modern-day reinterpretation of the "Shearing Sound" that took the jazz world by the storm in 1949, when the British pianist released "September In The Rain" on a 45 rpm EP record. The cool, gentle sound was produced by a unique combination of instruments: a piano, a vibraphone, a guitar, and a bass and a drum kit. The respective instruments are played here by the top New York musicians of the 21st century -- Benny Green, Steve Nelson, Satoshi Inoue (the de facto leader), Peter Washington and Kenny Washington.

Operating under the moniker "Manhattan Five," these master musicians respectfully pay hommage to George Shearing and, at the same time, bring their own sensibilities and fresh ideas to the project. For example, Shearing's immortal composition "Lullaby Of Birdland" is turned into a waltz, and the Shearing group's hit song "East Of The Sun" is given a Latin treatment. In addition to the quintessential hit tunes like "September In The Rain," the group also acknowledges Shearing's wide range of influecnes by performing his bebop composition "Conception" and Latin sleeper "Mambo Inn." They also play two tunes from Japan: a standard melody "Suzukake No Michi" and a theme song from a famous TV animation series "Lupin The Third."

From the conception of the group to the arrangements, tight ensemble and inspired solo performances, this CD represents the best of what the modern-day straight-ahead jazz scene offers. As is the case with all M&I releases, the CD's production value and sound quality is superb as well. Recommended!

Produced by Makoto Kimata and Satoshi Inoue. Recorded at Kaleidoscope Sound, NJ, June 2 & 3, 2008.
