Artist/Band: | | Junko Moriya Trio | Name: | | Three And Four | Cat No.: | | SOLJP-0011 | Performed by: | | Junko Moriya (piano) Sean Smith (bass) Bill Stewart (drums)
| Release Date: | | 01/20/2010 | Description: | | Junko Moriya is a Japanese composer and pianist, and the winner of the prestigious 2005 Thelonious Monk International Composers Competition. She has been active both in the US and Japan after obtaining a Master's degree from Manhattan School of Music in New York. Known for her exceptional compositions and arrangements for big bands and medium-sized combos -- see Playground and Groovin' Forward -- she turnd to a piano trio format for the first time.
This latest release from Spice of Life, and her sixth album as leader, was, therefore, a challenge and an opporunity for Moriya to highlight her talents as pianist. Since she wanted no excuse, she surrounded herself with a first-rate rhythm section -- Bill Stewart, certainly one of the top drummers of our time, and his frequent collaborator and superb bassist Sean Smith.
Moriya more than proves her position as a premier pianist, if it was indeed necessary. Reflective of her compositional style, her piano playing is incisive, creative, and sometimes quite adventurous, but firmly rooted in the tradition of modern jazz. Her sound is full and lovely, and there is something "cool" about her playing -- in the best sense-- underscored by her intelligence and good taste. It is also a delight that Stewart is brilliant throughout, supporting and inspiring the leader with his crisp and colorful drumming. Recommended without reservation to fans of piano trio jazz!
Produced by Junko Moriya. All songs composed and arranged by Junko Moriya. Recorded at Avatar Studio in NYC on October 28 & 29, 2009. |
