Artist/Band: | | Dan Nimmer Trio | Name: | | Modern Day Blues | Cat No.: | | VHCD-78191 | Performed by: | | Dan Nimmer (piano) David Wong (bass) Pete Van Nostrand (drums)
| Release Date: | | 06/02/2010 | Description: | | A young pianist from Milwaukee, Dan Nimmer is definately one to watch. Within a year of his move to New York in 2004, he was picked up by Wynton Marsalis and since then has been an indispensable member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. His solo recording career has taken off in Japan, with three trio CDs for Venus Records under his belt (Kelly Blue, Tea For Two and Yours Is My Heart Alone).
Informed by Wynton Kelly, Red Garland, Erroll Garner and Ahmad Jamal, Nimmer's sensibilities are definitely traditional and straight ahead. His touch is clean and strong, and he has a driving sense of swing. When I saw him a few years ago with with the Wynton Marsalis Quintet, I was mighty impressed by his imaginative playing and ability to "tell a story" with his well-structured solos.
His fourth and latest release from Venus Records is another winning trio date, this time with his contemporary band mates -- bassist David Wong and drummer Pete Van Nostrand. The program has a few standards, but the bulk of it consists of attractive compositions by jazz musicians, including cool gems like "Out of the Past" by Benny Golson, "Le Coiffeur" by Dexter Gordon and "Uh Huh" by Hank Mobley. Nimmer closes the program with his "Modern-Day Blues," a powerful modal blues and definitely a highlight of this satisfying CD. Recommended to fans of straight-ahead piano trio music!
Recorded at Avatar Studio in New York on December 20 and 21, 2009 by Katherine Miller. Mixed and mastered by Tetsuo Hara / Venus Hyper Magnum Sound Direct Mix. Gate-fold paper sleeve edition. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
