| | Release Date: | | 10/23/2013 | | Description: | | A fast-rising jazz singer, Cyrille Aimée was born in a suburb of Paris to a French father and a Dominican mother, and began singing the so-called French Gypsy jazz. She moved to the United States in 2005 to attend a conservatory at State University of New York Purchase and studied under Pete Malinverni, Jon Faddis and Jimmy Greene. She won the Montreux Festival Jazz Voice Competition in 2007 and was a finalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition of 2010.
Following her debut CD Just The Two Of Us released in Japan by Venus Records, she has made several albums in the U.S. It's A Good Day is her first CD to be released by a major label, Victor Entertainment.
In this album, Aimee created her unique blend of hybrid jazz. The most prominent ingredient is French Gypsy jazz (or "manouche" jazz), which is her root, but there are also Brazilian spices and pop flavors. The international band consists of three guitarists (one French, one Brazilian, one French-Italian), an Australian bassist, and a Sri Lankan drummer who grew up in Australia. Together, they cover a few standards including the happy opener "It's A Good Day," all-scat bebop number "Tricrotism," and the unexpected "People Are Strange" by The Doors. There are also four attractive originals by Aimee and band member Sam Anning. In addition, this Japanese edition includes two bonus tracks, "Love Me Or Leave Me" and "Smile."
A lovely, eclectic vocal album by a free-spirited, young artist surrounded by talented musicians. One of the best vocal albums of the year! Recommended!
