| | Release Date: | | 07/19/2013 | | Description: | | A rising star in the German jazz scene, Elmar Brass (b. 1979) studied classical piano and jazz at the conservatory for music and theatre in Hannover and obtained his degree in 2005. He has performed internationally with artists like Dusko Goykovich, Lewis Nash and who's who of European jazz musicians. His debut CD from the Japanese label Atelier Sawano, Night Dreamer, was a big hit and captured the attention of Japanese jazz fans.
His sophomore release from Sawano, Spellbound is a fantastic piano trio outing. In this beautifully recorded trio album, Brass shows his impeccable technique, crystalline touch, a sprightly sense of swing and a modern and sophisticated sense of harmony. The opening number ("Joshua," a cool tune penned by Victor Feldman) swings relentlessly and the following "The Big Hang," the sole original by Brass, is eminently funky. The mixture of selections -- mostly jazzmen's originals with some standards -- is excellent and his interpretations are fresh and invigorating. Enthusiastically recommended!
