Artist/Band: | | Hiroe Sekine | Name: | | After The Rainfall | Cat No.: | | SM-1002 | Performed by: | | Hiroe Sekine (keyboard, piano, vocal) Bob Sheppard (flute, soprano sax, tenor sax) Larry Koonse (guitar) Darek Oles (bass) Jimmy Johnson (electric bass) Peter Erskine (drums) Arnold McCuller (vocal)
| Description: | | Japanese pianist Hiroe Sekine has been playing and arranging music in the United States for two decades. She also happens to be a personal friend of mine with whom I play tennis almost weekly. Hiroe is a gifted jazz pianist, composer, arranger and singer based in Southern California. A native of Japan, she studied with Russell Ferrante and Alan Pasqua, among others, at the prestigious Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, and graduated with honors.
Her just-released second album, After The Rainfall, follows the critically acclaimed A-me (rain), recorded two years earlier and also produced by Russell Ferrante. Like the first album, it features such first-rate, Los Angeles-based musicians as Bob Sheppard, Larry Koonse, Darek Oles and Peter Erskine.
In some important ways, however, this album is quite different. Whereas Ame featured acoustic instruments and straight-ahead, bebop-oriented jazz, on this CD Hiroe uses keyboards as well as acoustic piano, and the tunes are more varied, including a couple of Brazilian/bossa tunes and even Lennon/McCartney's "In My Life", where Hiroe sings a powerful duet with guest singer Arnold McCuller. She also uses her wordless vocal as another instrument in a few more tunes.
The soundscape is decidedly contemporary, and Hiroe's four original compositions shine with evocative melodies and sense of longing. A cool rendition of Chick Corea's "Windows" and a tricky, odd-metered, fusion-like arrangement of Monk's "Evidence" are also stand-outs.
I'm proud to be a friend of such a talented musician, and to present her wonderful CD to the world at Eastwind Import. Very highly recommended to all jazz fans!
Recorded at the Entourage Recording Studios, Hollywood on August 5 and 6, 2011. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
