Artist/Band:Steve Kuhn Trio
Name:Waltz - Blue Side
Cat No.:VHCD-4112
Performed by:Steve Kuhn (piano)
Gary Peacock (bass)
Billy Drummond (drums)
Release Date:04/21/2004
Description:Pianist Steve Kuhn's two-CD "Waltz" project had a very interesting concept. First, they selected a program entirely consisting of waltz tunes, although all of them were not necessarily played in three beat rhythm. Second, Kuhn formed two different trios with the same drummer -- Billy Drummond -- and two different bassists: Gary Peacock and Eddie Gomez. Third, the two trios would play the same tunes (well, almost).

The set with Gary Peacock (TKCV-35178) was named the "Blue Side" based on the "blue" and reflective mood. The CD with Eddie Gomez (TKCV-35197) was called the "Red Side" because the set was hotter and had a passionate mood.

It is fascinating to see what the two bassists brought to the program that shared eight of the nine tunes, and how Kuhn and Drummond responded to them. If Peacock took the trio to a more restrained and introspective direction, Gomez infused them with kinetic and driving energy. They are both beautiful, fascinating piano trio albums. Which one would you prefer? Get them both to find out.

Recorded by Katherine Miller at "The Studio" in New York in May 2002. Mixed and mastered by Venus 24-bit Hyper Magnum Sound. Limited paper sleeve edition.
