Artist/Band: | | Blossom Dearie | Name: | | Sings Rootin' Songs | Cat No.: | | THCD-074 | Performed by: | | Blossom Dearie (vocal) Joe Harnell (arranger, piano) Dick Romoff (bass) Ted Sommer (drums) Jerome Richardson (flute, tenor sax)
| Description: | | With her distinctive, girlish voice, impeccable sense of rhythm and bebop sensibilities, Blossom Dearie is one of the most beloved jazz singers of our time. She made six albums for Verve in the late 1950s that are considered as her definitive body of recorded work, but this unusual item, Sings Rootin' Songs, ranks right at the top with those albums in terms of quality.
In 1962, Dearie recorded a song for a radio commercial for Hires Root Beer. As it proved very popular, this LP was released as a premium item that could be ordered for one dollar and a proof of purchase of a case of the company's root beer. It had been a rare, collector's item until it was reissued for the first time in 1987 by DIW records of Japan. This edition, remastered and released in 2008 by DIW's branch label Think! Records, comes in a paper sleeve that faithfully reproduces the jacket of the original LP.
Despite the unusual circumstances, this is no "novelty" record. Dearie's singing, arrangements, and the band's performance are all first rate. As the subtitle "The most Rootin' Tootin' Songs of 1963" suggests, it is a collection of songs which were popular in 1963. And what a great year it was! We have "Days of Wine and Roses," "I Left My Heart In San Francisco," "The Good Life," "Desafinado," and "Fly Me To The Moon," among others. Such was the quality of popular music in the US back then.
If you are a fan of Blossom Dearie, you MUST own this CD. If you don't know her yet, this CD is a wonderful place to start. Highly recommended!
Recorded in June, 1963. This paper sleeve edition was remastered and reissued by Think! Records of Japan in 2008. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
