Review by Scott Yanow
On The Look Of Love, Nicki Parrott sings and plays bass on 14 classic songs that were featured in Hollywood movies. Parrott, who was born and raised in Australia, played piano and flute before switching to bass when she was 15. She gained the attention of the jazz and swing worlds staring in 2000 when she began performing regularly with Les Paul. Parrott has been a regular at New York jazz parties, clubs, cruises and recordings ever since. The many greats who she has worked with include Michel Legrand, Clark Terry, Bucky and John Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Harry Allen, Warren Vache, Scott Hamilton and Ann Hampton Callaway. Parrott's discography includes leading eight CDs for the Venus label prior to this one.
While Nicki Parrott was best known as a bassist in her earlier period, in recent times her warm voice has become a major attraction. While she plays bass throughout The Look Of Love and has a few brief solos, the focus is on her straightforward and attractive singing. She sounds particularly wonderful on a rare vocal version of "Moonlight Serenade" (which is eligible for this movie music album because it was included in The Glenn Miller Story) and such songs as "The Look Of Love," "As Time Goes By," a swinging "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend," and a medium-tempo "Over The Rainbow."
Parrott is joined by pianist John Di Martino, drummer Alvin Atkinson and, on some selections, vibraphonist Chuck Redd, Ken Peplowski (clarinet and tenor) and her sister Lisa Parrott on baritone (which fits perfectly on "The Man That Got Away") and alto. Peplowski's clarinet on "Moonlight Serenade" and Redd's vibes on "The Shadow Of Your Smile" are among the instrumental highlights.
But The Look Of Love is primarily recommended for the very appealing and romantic vocals of Nicki Parrott.
