Description:Limited Edition EMI Japan Jazz Best & More Series!
Hard-to-find, rare reissue CD for a special low price!

John Lewis of MJQ fame and Gunther Schuller were major proponents of the so-called "Third Stream" movement whose aim was to combine classical music and jazz to create new contemporary music. Orchestra U.S.A. was the first regular group to perform their music and consisted of two string quartets, seven woodwinds and seven brass players, two percussionists plus a guitar and a piano.

Generally speaking I'm not fond of this kind of hybrid efforts, but this album, recorded in 1963, is a success largely due to the top-notch jazz musicians who contributed wonderful solos. And what talents they gathered here, as the soloists include Eric Dolphy, Phil Woods, John Lewis and Jim Hall. The rock solid rhythm section includes Richard Davis and Connie Kay.

An important and interesting document of the Third Steam movement!

Released on CD for the first time in Japan.

Recorded January 12, February 4 and 27, 1963. Originally released by Colpix Records.
