Artist/Band: | | Jacob Fischer Trio | Name: | | My Romance - Tribute To Bill Evans [CD] | Cat No.: | | VHCD-1132 | Performed by: | | Jacob Fischer (guitar) Martin Wind (bass) Tim Horner (drums)
| Release Date: | | 09/18/2013 | Description: | | Danish native Jacob Fischer is a rising star and one of the most in-demand jazz guitarists in Scandinavia and Europe. Born in 1967, the self-taught guitarist began working as a professional when he was 17 years old, and since then has participated in over 200 recordings.
His fifth album as a leader, and his debut from the Japanese label Venus Records, is an ambitious project: A tribute to Bill Evans with a simple trio with Martin Wind on bass and Tim Horner on drums. Their efforts are a success on many levels. On some tracks, they succeed because they use completely different approaches from those used by Evans in his well-known recorded performances. Examples of these include the unsentimental, hard-boiled approach of the opening track and the imaginative collective improvisations on "Nardis." On a few other tracks includign "My Foolish Heart," they succeed to recreate the mood and atmosphere of the legendary Bill Evans trio with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian despite the difference in the leading instrument.
This is a remarkable debut CD from a very talented guitarist. We will undoubtedly hear more of him in the coming years.
This is a CD edition. The vinyl LP version is available here.
Produced by Tetsuo Hara. Recorded at Trading 8s Studio in New York on June 20 and 21, 2013. Engineered by Katherine Miller. Mixed and mastered by Tetsuo Hara.
Review by Scott Yanow
Jacob Fischer is a harmonically advanced guitarist with a swinging style. He has spent much of his life living in Denmark and was largely self-taught, learning jazz guitar by listening to the greats on recordings. He worked with violinist Svend Asmussen in the 1990s and has since worked with the top Danish musicians in addition to Toots Thielemans, Art Farmer, Lee Konitz, Gary Bartz, and Scott Hamilton among others. His playing is influenced and inspired by Jimmy Raney, Jim Hall and Bill Evans, yet he has a distinctive tone of his own.
My Romance is a tribute to Bill Evans. Fischer, bassist Martin Wind and drummer Tim Horner perform four Evans originals plus nine other songs that the pianist enjoyed playing. Although not having a piano player naturally gives this group a different sound than the Bill Evans Trio, the close interplay between the three musicians is reminiscent of the musical magic that Evans strived for on a nightly basis.
The set begins with a swinging "You And The Night And The Music." Fischer's original sound and the tightness of the trio make this a memorable version. They perform a pretty and heartfelt version of "Haunted Heart" and sensitive renditions of such ballads as "I Fall In Love Too Easily," "My Foolish Heart" and "Polka Dots And Moonbeams." On "My Romance" they revive Evans' own habit of picking out a standard and having it alternate every half-chorus between two keys; it works very well on this song. Other highlights include Wind's bowed bass on "Nardis," a cooking rendition of "Show Type Tune," an adventurous exploration of "Time Remembered" and a joyful "Waltz For Debby."
My Romance is a tribute album that Bill Evans himself would have enjoyed.
