Description:Mini-LP (paper jacket) edition!

For their fifth album for Venus Records, Bill Charlap and his New York Trio decided to do another songbook, this time of Cole Porter.

If you count Bill Charlap's "other" trio's albums, this is the fourth songbook of great American composers. Previous efforts include that of Leonard Bernstein (Somewhere), George Gershwin (The American Soul) and Duke Ellington (Love You Madly). This CD from Japan is an important part of the collection of a songbook series by the premier pianist of our time.

When you combine the heavenly melodies and romanticism of Cole Porter and a great piano trio that has played together for five years, the results are simply magical. The program begins with a swinging "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home to," goes through a beautiful chestnut "So In Love," unusually slow "Begin the Beguine," and ends with a heart-breaking "Every Time We Say Goodbye." Charlap plays "Just One of Those Things" with solo piano.

Recorded at The Studio in New York in August 2005 by Katherine Miller; Venus Hyper Magnum 24-bit mastering; Swing Journal Gold Disc.
