Artist/Band:Art Tatum
Name:Piano Starts Here - Live At The Shrine - Zenph Re-Performance [Hybrid SACD]
Cat No.:88697222182
Performed by:Art Tatum (piano)
Description:Imagine sitting in The Shrine Auditorium on April 2, 1949 and hearing Art Tatum's brilliant solo piano performance in person. No scratch noise from the old LP; nor mechanical "warble" caused by imprecise tape speed. Just the magnificent performance, with great sonics. This Zenph "re-performance" disc features new recordings of that experience specifically designed for surround-sound, stereo or headphone listening.

ZENPH takes audio recordings and turns them back into live performances, precisely replicating what was originally recorded. The software-based process extracts and encodes the details of how each note was played, including musical nuances such as volume, articulation and pedal actions. The encoding is played back on an acoustic grand piano fitted with sophisticated computers and hardware. This "re-performance" is then recorded afresh using the latest recording techniques.

This revolutionary concept and technology may be controversial from a purist's perspective, but the result is an undeniable and resounding success! The sound coming out of the 9-foot Yamaha Disklavier Pro grand piano was authentic, powerful and beautiful. This hybrid SACD -- recorded in DSD -- provides one of the best listening experiences for fans of piano music.

In addition to the "usual" stereo and 5-channel surround mixes, the recording team utilized a set of microphones set on a dummy head and placed them close to where Tatum's head would have been while he recorded these immortal tracks. These "binaural" tracks are included as a separate set on this disc. By using high quality headphones, one can experience something close to what Tatum was hearing when he played these notes. What a fantastic treat!

The disc faithfully follows the format of the original LP Piano Starts Here. It starts out with four tracks played without live audience, replicating the studio recording on the original album. The remaining nine tracks were recorded in The Shrine Auditorium in front of a live audience. You can hear the enthusiastic applause of the audience who appear to be genuinly impressed with the performance. This is a must-own disc for fans of piano music and audiophiles!

Zenph re-performance session produced by Steven Epstein. Recorded live on September 23, 2007 at The Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles. This recording was made directly to DSD utilizing the Sonoma Digital System. This hybrid SACD contains stereo CD, stereo SACD and surround multichannel SACD tracks, and can be played in all standard CD players, SACD players, and universal players.
