Artist/Band: | | Yuko Ohashi Trio | Name: | | Two Chords [CD] | Cat No.: | | TYR-1039 | Performed by: | | Yuko Ohashi (piano) Shinobu Sato (bass) Shinji Mori (drums)
| Release Date: | | 12/25/2013 | Description: | | Yasukuni Terashima is a well-known, iconoclastic jazz critic and avid audiophile who has published numerous books on jazz and audio in Japan. At age 70 he launched his own label, Terashima Records, and began releasing jazz CDs and LPs that reflects his ideals for jazz music and how records should sound.
Two Chords is an audiophile-grade CD that presents an excellent piano-bass-drums trio, led by pianist Yuko Ohashi. The sound is punchy and energetic. There are the big bass, snappy drums and shimmering cymbals, and warm and full-bodied piano tones.
Selected tunes are varied and interesting. Aside from some standards, there are three original compositions by Ohashi herself, and three originals by European jazz musicians. The title track, composed by Italian pianist Piero Bassini, literally consists of only two chords. It is interesting to hear how the trio develops this very simple structure, especially as the CD includes two different takes. The emphasis is on attractive melodic content, and many of the songs are played at a medium to slow tempo. Available on both CD and vinyl LP, this album is recommended for both performance and sound quality!
