Artist/Band: | | Carsten Dahl Jesper Bodilsen Ed Thigpen | Name: | | Tribute To Night Train | Cat No.: | | DONUTS-003 | Performed by: | | Carsten Dahl (piano) Jesper Bodilsen (bass) Ed Thigpen (drums)
| Description: | | Danish pianist Carsten Dahl, known for his wonderful albums from the Japanese label Marshmallow Recoreds, had a very special relationship with Ed Thigpen, the legendary American drummer who became a Danish citizen and lived in Copenhagen since 1972. Dahl actually began his career as a drummer and trained Thigpen at Copenhagen's Rhythmic Conservatory before switching to piano. His collaboration with the expat drummer continued until Thigpen passed away in January 13, 2010.
This CD is a swinging collaboration between Dahl and his mentor, a tribute to Night Train, the classic album by the Oscar Peterson Trio of which Thigpen was a member. Instead of simply re-performing the original album, the trio--augmented by superb bassist Jesper Bodilsen--emulates its spirit, the swing and the blues feeling. Indeed, none of the original tunes are repeated here except for "Bags' Groove" and the two solo piano performances of "Hymn To Freedom" at the beginning and the end of the program.
With Dahl channeling the spirito of Peterson, Bodilsen providing a solid foundation with his warm, big tone, and Thigpen shining throughout the program especially with his impeccable brush work, this is a great piano trio album that celebrates jazz. It is also a perfect album to listen to and think about the huge contributions Ed Thigpen made to the Danish jazz scene. His legacy will live on in the young Scandinavian musicians he mentored, including Mathias Algotsson and Carsten Dahl.
Recorded in 2007 at KAEV Studio, Copenhagen, Denmark. | Eastwind Import Price: | |
